* At the time of Charles Jr's birth, Charles Sr was 61 and Susan, 41. The child was immediately placed by Susan in a foster/adoption facility in St Paul MN, where she went to have the baby, 100 miles to the west of Eau Claire WI. In April 1909, when Charles Jr was about 10, George Taylor & Alma (OLSON) VALENTINE had him baptized into their church as Vernon Clemens VALENTINE which effectively made him their child. On 20Nov1920 he was officially adopted by them.

There are some who believe that Charles Jr was conceived by Charles Sr while he lived 250 miles to the east of Eau Claire in an old soldiers' home. There are others that believe that Charles Jr was conceived by Burr AVERY in Eau Claire. Only a DNA test performed on any descendant of Charles Jr/Vernon and then compared to the VAUGHAN DNA database will put the matter to rest.

This is no reflection on Charles Jr/Vernon nor his siblings or descendants as he and they were/are unwitting players.

(The former soldiers' home property in Milwaukee WI is now the site of Woods National Cemetery.)
