Spaghetti & Macaroni
Spaghetti & Macaroni
My father had a great sense of humor, and often used it to torment my older sister...all in the name of fun.

We were living on Mount Vernon Street in Arlington, Mass and my sister Pat was in about the second or third grade attending Catholic school, so it would be the early 1950s, but in the days when Catholic school was all nuns all the time.

Pat came home with an assignment to learn where spaghetti and macaroni came from. So naturally, she turned to her father who, in the eyes of any girl that age, is probably the smartest person in the entire world.

My father calmly explained that spaghetti is long and straight, while macaroni is short and curled. Thus, spaghetti grown on trees and macaroni grows on bushes. Pat dutifully recorded this valuable information, and reported it back as absolute truth in school the next day.

The nuns were, needless to say, not in the least amused.
